The tests were conducted along the route of a pressure pipeline that lies across the Zapadno-Noyabrskoye and Kholmogorskoye oilfields operated by Gazpromneft-Oktyabrskneftegaz. The Chelpiper 75 drone successfully flew the mission by taking regular (daytime) and infrared (nighttime) shots of two of the pipeline’s sections. Various types of failures were imitated and successfully detected in the course of the mission. Additionally, the UAV performed demonstration flights in manual route adjustment mode while streaming video online. The monitoring system’s functionality can be efficiently used under extreme conditions or when monitoring on-site work.
“It is not just economic effect that can justify the switch to the new UAV monitoring technology for pressure pipelines as compared to traditional helicopter, road or foot patrolling,” said Gazpromneft-Oktyabrskneftegaz Chief Technical Officer Valeriy Chikin. “In place of a simple visual survey, what we get is a possibility to create and update a database on pipeline failures. Besides, the use of infrared photography (thermal imaging) helps detect minor pipeline failures and take steps to remedy these before major emergencies related to oil spills arise. One should note the safety of drone use as well: casualties will be avoided in the case of a crash.”
“An important aspect of using drones for monitoring of energy infrastructure sites is expanding the possibilities to suppress unauthorized activity in safeguarded zones,” said Kirill Tsallagov, head of the Rimera-Service business unit in Izhevsk and manager of the chelpipe.avia project. “The high sensitivity of the equipment installed aboard the drone allows detecting illegal taps even where wrongdoers are using small-diameter pipes or high-pressure hoses to tap into the pipe.”
Gazpromneft-Oktyabrskneftegaz and Rimera-Service engineers are in the process of designing technical documents for commercial operation of the UAV monitoring system.
